DIY Pine Cone Home Fresheners
It's pretty warm still in California, the nights are getting a little colder but the days are still warm. It doesn't feel to much like Christmas. It actually feels more like a zombie Apocalypse lately with the Fires that are raging here. I am a little more than 50 miles away from the nearest fires but the amount of smoke and even ash is pretty bad. The light coming through the windows is this yellow/orangey haze. Here is a view from my backyard deck. This was taken at 2 in the afternoon.
OK back to the post, so in my December Simply Earth Recipe Box I received a recipe for Rudolf's Pine Cone Home Fresheners. Since you can see its not looking a lot like Christmas here on the central coast, I thought these might help get into the Christmas Spirit.
So I sent my kids out looking for pine cones and they came back with five fairly large pine cones.
Since I wasn't expecting such large pine cones I chose three that looked the best. Then you want to soak your pine cones in water for about an hour. The only bowl I could find to fit these three was our Halloween candy bowl!
After soaking for an hour you will want to transfer your pine cones to a foil lined cookie sheet and bake them at 200 degrees for 30 Minutes. I didn't even notice how much these pine cones started to change after soaking them!
Here are my pine cones after they spent their 30 minutes in the oven. Then you will want to let them sit out and completely cool.
You'll want to stick your pine cones into a gallon Ziploc bag. Good thing I only chose 3 pine cones because that's all that would fit in my Ziploc bag. Simply Earth suggests Cinnamon, Pine, and Peppermint for their Rudolf Scented Cones, but you can use any combination just add 30 drops in total. I did 10 drops each of the suggested essential oils.
Once you've added your 30 drops of essential oils, you will want to seal your Ziploc and give it a good shake to cover as much of your pine cones as you can. Then you'll want to leave your pine cones to sit and soak up the scent for 1 week. Then Put your pine cones where ever you want to freshen up and scent.
This was such a cute and easy little project, but I never would of thought of it. I've been thinking how I could add some pine cones to my Christmas Decor and Simply Earth gave me the perfect option. I love the scent combination, it smells so wonderful.
